College
of Charleston piled on 10
runs in the fifth inning and five more in the sixth inning to escape with a
16-13 win over Appalachian State University Friday evening.
The Mountaineers took an early six-run lead, but a rough
fifth inning by junior pitcher Josh Dowdy left the door open for a Cougar
comeback.
ASU junior Brett Stewart hit a three-run homer in the fourth
to push the Mountaineers’ lead to 4-0, but Charleston’s Gabe Marchant hit a
single to drive in two runs and cut the deficit in half.
Third baseman Jeremie Tice followed Marchant’s lead with a
double to tie the ballgame at six.
Several errors by the Mountaineer defense allowed the
Cougars to push their lead 10-6 at the end of the fifth.
Appalachian was able to get six runs in the bottom of the eighth, but the
damage had already been done, as Charleston’s
closer Jesse Simpson came in mid-way through the eighth to finish the game and
lead the Cougars to their 20th win of the season.
Charleston
extends it all-time series lead to 23-5 dating back to 1993.
For ASU, it’s the team’s second-straight loss and it drops
them to 15-15 on the season.
Game two of the weekend series will be Saturday at 3 p.m. at
Smith Stadium.
