The 13th annual Appalachian GuitarFest will offer a display of classical guitar musicianship April 11 to 13 by a range of performers with the intention to entertain.

“I would encourage people who don’t know classical guitar to come and check it out,” associate professor of guitar Dr. Douglas G. James said.

Artists will come from all over the country, but local musicians will also be present.

James is pleased at the variety of performers attending the festival at Broyhill Music Center’s Rosen Concert Hall.

The headliners include Elliot Frank and Stephen Robinson, scheduled to play Friday, and Alexander Dunn and William Kanengiser performing Saturday.

Kanengiser is a founding member of the Grammy Award-winning Los Angeles Guitar Quartet.

“These artists are world class - recognizable for people who follow classical guitar,” James said.

With the exception of the main concerts and the final round of competition, most of the festival is free to the public.

Free events include the semifinal round of competition at 2 p.m. Saturday and the Guitarfest Guitar Orchestra set to play Sunday.

The Guitar Orchestra will consist of an estimated 50 guitar players sounding as one.

Three levels of performers will be competing over the weekend.

Division I is the collegiate level.

“These guys play like pros,” James said.

Two youth divisions will also compete with performers of high school age and younger.

James said the competitions are not dull due to the short amount of time performers have to play.

People who have a higher musical understanding may enjoy attending the master classes.  During these sessions, a student plays a piece of music, and afterward a guitar teacher comments on what the student has played.

Student tickets priced at $10 are available through the Farthing Auditorium box office and will also be sold at the door.

Student prices have not been available for the past three years but are now offered.

Individual non-student tickets are on sale for $20 and full package tickets for $60 through Farthing or at the door.
