The Appalachian State University’s men’s club lacrosse team woke up Saturday morning confident entering its game against the University of North Carolina at Charlotte.
Unfortunately, the team’s recent 11-7 victory over Davidson College would not be an accurate prediction of the challenge Charlotte had in store as they downed the Mountaineers 17-6.
Scoring 11 goals in the first half, Charlotte quickly displayed its speed and versatility, offering few opportunities for the Mountaineers to score.

“They moved the ball really well and passed well,” club president
junior Robert M. Simpson said. “They had some great shots on goal, and
their defense was spot on, which is why we didn’t score the first
quarter.”
The team never wants to expect one outcome over another, yet they
hadn’t quite anticipated the game Charlotte brought, Simpson said.
“I came in thinking that it was going to be a good, close game,”
Simpson said. “And they’re definitely one of the better teams we’ve
played.”
The second half allowed Charlotte to find four more goals before
Appalachian could score again. With the score at 15-2, the Mountaineers
combined to match Charlotte’s four goals.
At that point, however, the Mountaineers’ defense could not maintain the 49ers who continued to score two more goals.

“We just came out flat-footed; we played a lot better the second half,
but they just had a cohesiveness that we didn’t,” Simpson said.
Sophomore management major Jonathan H. Meisner currently serves as vice-president and will assume president next year.
Agreeing with Simpson, Meisner said a goal for the team next season is to achieve team unity.
“They just played really well together, and we were out there as
individuals,” Meisner said. “We played last weekend against Davidson
and we were hoping to roll it over to this time.”
The team graduates only two seniors, and therefore most of the team will be allowed another year to compete together.
“Talent-wise I feel like we’re all in the same place, but them and
[Elon University] both are really great teams,” Simpson said. “We were
able to go to the conference tournament my freshman year, but we’ve
missed it the past two years. We were a lot closer this year than last
though.”
