Singer songwriter Colbie Caillat sold out Farthing Auditorium Apr. 15. Students, community members and fans from across the state traveled to hear Caillat’s easy-listening, tropical and peaceful voice.

Following her performance, Caillat took time to sit down with The Appalachian and discuss her career, musical influences and life as a typical 22 year old experiencing life, love and changes.

The Appalachian: Do the lyrics from your songs come from relationships or situations you have been in?

Colbie Caillat: I don’t intentionally write about romance or certain events, it’s just what I’m feeling, and I’m a 22-year-old girl, so girls relate and it just happens that way.

TA: What is the best surprise, or craziest thing you’ve encountered since being on tour?

CC: On the John Mayer Cruise, while I was performing “Battle,” [Mayer] came on stage to play guitar, and that was like insane. He had said that he wanted to, but for him to actually come out and really want to play, and do it was amazing.

TA: What artists have been inspirations for you?

CC:
John Mayer is definitely number one, and Bob Marley and Lauryn Hill.

TA: What do you aspire to do?

CC: It’s so weird. I hope to become a songwriter for other people. I like singing and recording in the studio, but I’m just not used to the performance part. I’m sure I’ll get there eventually, but right now I could go either way.

TA: What do you miss the most while you’re on tour?

CC:
My sister, family and dogs. I have a lab and a beagle.

TA: What were you doing a year ago?

CC: Just last December I was working in a tanning bed in California. Jason [Reeves] was living with my family and I, so we were just writing songs like every day. My friends actually made me the page on Myspace, and I got offered a record deal seven to eight months later. I’m really shy about it, so it took others stepping in.

TA: What do you think about Jason Reeves?

CC: That man, boy, whatever he is, is going somewhere. He writes like 100 songs a day. He’s going to be big, and he’s going to do it on his own.

TA: What are you wearing tonight?

CC: All Urban Outfitters, and my boots are from Amsterdam. I do my own hair and wardrobe, and my friend does my make-up.

TA: How did you feel about the performance tonight?

CC: It was really fun. Every day gets a little easier, but tonight I was nervous. Last night I was chilled and had a really great time. Inside, I just think too much.

TA: What inspires your music?

CC: Just what’s on my mind at the time. It’s really therapy to get it off my chest.
