What began as one city’s fight against global warming received attention from the world.

Earth Hour 2007 was a Sydney, Australia event. On March 29 at 8 p.m., Earth Hour 2008 was a global movement.

Earth Hour is part of the World Wildlife Fund’s campaign to encourage businesses, communities, and individuals to realize steps necessary to cut down on daily emissions.

A powerful message about the need for action on the threat of global warming is delivered by simply
turning off the lights for one hour.

It is the perfect opportunity for those global businesses, communities, and individuals to unite in a
common purpose as response to a global issue that affects all of us.

An Appalachian State University Earth Hour would contribute to the growing number of businesses that
 support the campaign.

According to EarthHour.org, if the greenhouse reduction achieved in Sydney during Earth Hour was
sustained for a year, it would be equivalent to removing 48,616 cars from the road.

Just imagine the impact Appalachian could have on the cause.

Together, students and faculty can strive for climate change by implementing our own Earth Hour in
which electricity in most buildings would shut down for an hour.

The steps toward a healthier environment need to happen now - before it’s too late to reverse the
devastating changes brought by our failure to care.

An hour is hardly a lot to ask for when the environment is in jeopardy.

Go green and promote a healthier environment.
