The second round draft selection of wide receiver Dexter Jackson, and sixth round draft pick of safety Corey Lynch resulted in the third time that Appalachian State has had two players selected in the National Football League Draft.
Offensive guard Kerry Brown and place kicker Julian Rauch signed terms as free agents very shortly after the conclusion of the draft.
“I think people are a little bit disappointed that Kerry wasn’t drafted in the sixth or seventh round as we expected, but we’re ecstatic about Dexter,” Assistant Athletics Director and Sports Information Director Mike Flynn said.
Jackson,
who also garnered fame for gracing the cover of Sports Illustrated
following the Mountaineer upset over the University of Michigan,
impressed NFL scouts at the NFL Combine in February, running the
40-yard dash in 4.27 seconds.
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers selected Jackson as the 27th pick of the second round (58th overall).
“[Lynch] getting a sixth round pick was about what we expected,” Flynn said.
Picked 11th of the sixth round, Lynch will be playing with the Cincinnati Bengals.
Brown and Rauch both were standouts for the Appalachian team as well,
playing vital roles in the team’s trip to three national championships.
Rauch, who is Appalachian’s all-time leader in kick scoring with 37
points and extra points with 247, was signed with the Pittsburgh
Steelers.
Two-time All-American Brown received the Jacobs Blocking Trophy, which
is awarded to the SoCon’s top offensive lineman in his last two seasons
playing for ASU.
“Kerry signing as a free agent as opposed to being a seventh round
selection, he got to choose his situation,” Flynn said. “[Brown] said
that he had 20 teams call right after the draft was finished and he got
to choose Washington. So we’re really happy for him, and Julian too.
[Rauch] was signed 10 minutes after the draft. Overall we’re really
happy, having two drafted since 1992 and then four total signed
contracts, we’re really pleased.”
