North Carolina Gov. Mike Easley honored Appalachian State University’s football team last week, declaring June 10 “Mountaineer Football Day” and inviting the team to the governor’s mansion as well as the state legislature.
According to a press release issued by the governor’s office, the event was coordinated in order to recognize the football team’s third consecutive national championship over the University of Delaware Blue Hens in the NCAA Division 1 Football Championship Subdivision.
“Appalachian State’s commitment and determination have created a football dynasty in North Carolina,” said Easley.

Moore, head coach of Appalachian’s football team said, “It’s been a
real treat for us -- an opportunity that not everyone gets to have.”
Moore said the team has taken trips to the state capital after each of its national victories.
“It’s a great experience, and these kids will remember it all their lives,” Moore said.
He said the team listened to speakers at the state legislature, and then some members of the team had an opportunity to speak.
According to a release from Appalachian’s University News service, the
team members presented the governor with a picture of the university’s
three trophies, and an autographed Mountaineer football helmet.
The release also said the state legislature passed a resolution the same day honoring the team’s 2007 season.
“It was a wonderful experience to be recognized by the governor and by
both houses of the General Assembly,” Chief of Staff for the Office of
the Chancellor Lorin Baumhover said. “It reflects well on what the
university has accomplished, particularly three wins in a row by our
football team.”
The press release from Gov. Easley’s office noted the team’s
season-opening victory against the University of Michigan Wolverines,
its overall season record of 13-2, and the team’s 516 wins since its
formation in 1928.
It also described Appalachian’s two previous championship wins against
Northern Iowa in 2005 and the University of Massachusetts in 2006.
“It’s been a great trip for us, each year,” Moore said.
