For the first time in school history, three Appalachian State University baseball players were selected in Major League Baseball’s First-Year Player Draft on June 6.
The news acts as yet another high accomplishment for Mountaineer athletics in recent years. Outfielders David Rubinstein and Jason Rook and pitcher Garrett Sherrill were selected in the eleventh and twelfth rounds of the 50-round round event.
Rubinstein was the first Mountaineer selected when he was chosen by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the eleventh round with the 324th overall selection.

Pitcher Garrett Sherrill was then selected in the twelfth round by the Milwaukee Brewers 12 spots later.
Each of the three players chose to forgo their senior seasons to enter
the draft but are still eligible to return to Appalachian if they do
not sign with their respective teams.
Rubinstein will be placed with the State College Spikes, a Short A team
affiliated with the Pittsburgh Pirates. Rubinstein was a two-time
all-conference selection with the Mountaineers and was also a 2007
All-American.
Rubinstein is the ninth-highest drafted Mountaineer in school history.
In his three years with the team, Rubinstein became Appalachian’s
career leader in doubles and solidified himself in the top-10 of seven
other career categories including at-bats, hits and runs.
Rubinstein posted an impressive .335 batting average for his career
with the Mountaineers. He was also third on the team in overall batting
average during the 2008 season.
Rook, who spent time as a pitcher and outfielder for the Mountaineers,
was most recognized for his skills at the plate. Rook managed to obtain
a .331 batting average during his three-year career.
He was second on the team this year in overall batting average for the
season with .358. As a pitcher, Rook also made an impression by
striking out more than 200 batters in his career, becoming one of only
three Appalachian players to do so.
Sherrill, who spent most of his time at Appalachian as a closer, ranks
second all-time in saves with 14. He also notched 18 career wins for
the Mountaineers; good enough for a fifth-place tie on the all-time
list. Sherrill will be placed with the Helena Brewers, an Advanced
Rookie team in the Pioneer League affiliated with the Milwaukee
Brewers.
