Appalachian State University received 15,000 applications for admission and 2,000 more in comparison with records from last year at this time.
Director of Admissions Paul N. Hiatt said the statistics would not be official until the census is taken after the tenth day of classes in September but his office expects the numbers to be very similar to present preliminary statistics.
The admissions goal for the freshman class is in the range of 2,750 to 2,775 new students; there are currently just fewer than 2,800 who have accepted the offer of admission.
Hiatt said the incoming freshman class will continue the trend at
Appalachian for each freshman class to be more academically competitive
than the last.
“This year [Appalachian] received the largest number of applications in
our history,” Hiatt said, “and it resulted confirmations for 2,794 of
the most academically well-prepared students we have ever had.”
University Admissions measures the academic viability of a class based
partly on academic record, class rank, and high school grade point
average.
The average SAT score of applicants who have accepted the offer is
currently 1163, not including the writing portion of the test, up 39
points from last year.
The average GPA increased from 3.78 last year to 3.88 this year. In
addition, 42 percent of applicants who have accepted the offer had a
high school GPA of 4.0 or higher, up from 33 percent last year, and 29
percent the year before.
Fifteen percent are coming from outside of North Carolina and 13
percent are coming from ethnically underrepresented populations.
Hiatt said many factors have contributed to Appalachian’s growing
attraction for highly competitive applicants. The addition of the
Department of Nursing as well as extra-curricular events such as
Appalachian’s success in the NCAA Division I Football Championship
Subdivision have been among the contributing factors to higher numbers
of applications for admission.
The consistently stronger freshman applicants “reflect the good work
and strong leadership of the administration and the university
community,” Hiatt said. “Everyone is part of this success.”
