Democrat Roy Carter, currently running for North Carolina’s 5th Congressional District, visited Appalachian State University on Wednesday.

The district covers the northwestern corner of the state from the Appalachian Mountains to the Piedmont Triad.

Carter is running against republican opponent Virginia Foxx, who has represented the district since 2005.

“My passion for service has caused me to run for congress,” Carter said, “and I’m very concerned with education, health care and environmental issues.”

Carter said he would also like to improve the economic development of the district.

“The Appalachian region is developing as a leader in the renewable energy field with all the research it’s doing, and I think we need to bring sustainable jobs back in the area,” Carter said, “Going ‘green’ is a big future to the region.”

Carter believes students should have easier access to need-based loans.

“Any nation that does not promote education is a nation ready to fall,” he said, “We must continue to help students get the education they need.

He would also work to allow affordable health care and insurance.

“Pharmaceutical companies charge much more than they should,” he said, “We’ve got to have some regulations in the health care industry.”

Carter grew up in rural North Carolina and has lived in several different mountain communities throughout his life.

He earned his college degree from East Tennessee State University and grew to become a teacher and football coach of 40 years.

Carter would like to give the students at Appalachian a chance to be heard.

“Appalachian State University is the rising star in North Carolina,” said Carter.

Appalachian is the only university located in the 5th Congressional District.

“If Roy Carter is elected, university students will be one of the most effected groups of people,”
said Ryan M. Eller, campaign manager of Roy Carter.

Eller said the issues Roy Carter cares about appeal to young people.

“In order for him to win, young people will need to turn out to vote,” said Eller.

Student Government Vice President Kendra M. Johnson said SGA is staying impartial to the election.

“I think it’s important for university students to be interested in the race between Roy Carter and Virginia Foxx,” said Johnson.

“Students will be represented by either candidate. It’s important for them to learn the issues of each candidate,” Johnson said.

SGA will work to bring more North Carolina candidates to the university next fall.

Voting for the congressional election will occur on Nov. 4.
