If Bavarian cream, apple fritters and rainbow sprinkles are what you crave in the middle of the night, you may be in luck.

Recently, Daylight Donuts opened a new location on King Street beside Capone’s Untouchable Pizza.

Husband and wife team Cole and Vicky Reed have been commuting from Hickory to run the new business, but plan to eventually move to the area.

“The location and people were a good mix for doughnuts,” Cole said. “And from what we have discovered, the people here are very nice and reasonable.”

Cole hopes his new shop will combine with Capone’s to draw customers to the area of King Street where few eateries are located.

“We’ve developed a good relationship between Capone’s,” Cole said. “Each business compliments the other, and we are glad that the location is a good draw for both of us.”

Although King Street offers many different varieties of food, Daylight Donuts is the only business open 24-hours every day of the week.

The employees begin baking at pre-dawn hours each day for the shop’s morning opening, so the owners decided to never close the doors to customers as long as someone was available to serve them.

“We have reached the point where we’ve had a line going out the door late each night,” Cole said.

Although J. Nolan McKew, senior music industries major enjoyed his butterscotch doughnut slightly before noon, he believes the 24-hour shop will benefit others.

“They are doing something that no one else is doing,” McKew said. “I’m sure it will be great for the night owls and late nights students…studying.”

While there are over 900 Daylight Donuts existing world wide, Cole stresses they do not consider themselves a chain.

“We really are a little mom and pop business,” Cole said. “It is not a franchise.”

After researching many bakeries, the Reeds were pleased with Daylight Donuts’ quality of products and business management.

The owners hold a licensing agreement with the company to buy their sugar, flower and shortening and use their recipes, but every product in the shop is made from scratch in clear view to anyone who enters through the door.

“We have tried to create an open kitchen where everything can be seen and [customers] can watch how things are being made,” Cole said.

Along with doughnuts, muffins and pastries, they plan to sell pies, cakes and cheesecakes in mid-October.

“We’re not currently [offering] them because these involve training and expertise from our employees,” Cole said. “Even the pie’s crusts are made from scratch from sweet dough.”

Tylor S. Dunnican, junior risk management and insurance major, has been working at the shop since its opening on Aug. 29.

The employees are encouraged to create unique baked goods that customers will enjoy.

“There is no set list for everyday,” Dunnican said. “We just try and have fun and make up our own creations.”

Although Dunnican senses some local community members do not support the business, he believes the convenient hours and affordable prices make Daylight Donuts a great addition to the Town of Boone.

“We’re open all night so everyone can get their fix, and we are more affordable than most places on King Street.”
