The Appalachian State University volleyball team took their first win of the season Tuesday night at Holmes Convocation Center, defeating the Winston Salem State University Lady Rams 3-0.

The win gave ASU a 1-6 record for the season.

In the first set of the game the Mountaineers took an early lead winning the first point in serve receive.

Appalachian continued scoring with the consistency of libero Cassie Engelgau’s serving and the front row attackers.

The Mountaineers finished the set with the score 25-12.

Appalachian served first in the second set taking another early lead and causing WSSU coach Douglas Hunter to call a timeout.

Constant coverage from the Mountaineer blockers picked up touches off the block to earn points helping Appalachian to take the second match 25-10.

By the third set the Mountaineers had gotten into rhythm and continued to play with the same consistency as in sets one and two.

On game point of the third match, with the ASU crowd on their feet, Engelgau served an ace to give the Mountaineers victory.

The final score of set three was 25-7.

Throughout the match the Lady Rams seemed to have an open spot in the center of the court, thus allowing the Mountaineers many kills in that location.

Middle hitter Carla Durham finished the game with 10 kills and Jordan Jesberg finished the game with eight kills.

Overall, the team played better and head coach Matt Ginipro and Jesberg said it had something to do with having the home-court advantage.

“The home game crowd let our energy be high,” Ginipro said. “I would like to thank every single fan who came to the game and invite them to bring a friend next time.”

“We have never had a crowd this big and it made our energy high,” Jesberg said.

Durham said the team had more confidence and saw improvements from the games earlier this season.

“Our passing was on and we didn’t have many errors,” Durham said. “The team meshed well and everything clicked.”

The Mountaineers had a team total of 38 kills, nine hitting errors, 25 digs and 10 serving aces.
With these numbers of improvement the team looks to only getting better as the season continues.

“I want us to improve in every contact we have,” Ginipro said. “All games are important but Sept. 24 is circled in red on my calendar because I want us to win… that is when conference starts and winning really counts.”
