Abundant amount of ‘JuicyCampus’ interest disappoints students
The Appalachian is disappointed by the amount of student interest and participation on JuicyCampus.com, an open forum devoted to anonymous gossip.
Appalachian State joined the campus on Sept. 2 along with a number of other colleges and universities.
The site itself was launched Oct. 24, 2007 by Mike Ivester, a Duke University alumnus.
JuicyCampus allows anyone to post practically anything they want about anyone –regardless if the information is true or not.
While
The Appalachian sees the value of networking and long-distance
communication use of Facebook.com, we fail to see the purpose of
JuicyCampus.
The site
serves no point for the student body and encourages unnecessary gossip,
hurt, defame and potential harm for those mentioned.
According to Ivester, the site does not collect the identities of those who post, and in accordance with the “Pursuant to
The Communications Decency Act of 1996 Section 230,” JuicyCampus holds no responsibility for anything posted.
The
Appalachian is fearful for the students whose personal information,
such as full names, room numbers and addresses are posted on the site
without any regulation or concern for their safety.
Students
who are victimized on the site under inappropriate posts such as “What
girls are easy,” have their identities displayed for not only students
at Appalachian to see, but anyone who visits the site.
The Appalachian encourages students to refrain from visiting or posting on JuicyCampus.
The students of Appalachian should have more respect for their fellow Mountaineers.
