Week 3 Power Rankings

Two weeks into the NFL season, we’re already starting to see what teams are contenders and what teams are pretenders.

Disappointments abound with several preseason playoff favorites already sitting at 0-2.

The Minnesota Vikings, San Diego Chargers, Cleveland Browns and Seattle Seahawks were all thought to have potential to make playoff runs this year.

The Chargers are especially disappointing, given the constant rambling that goes around on ESPN about how talented they are.  The Chargers lost both their games in the final minute, but that’s no excuse.

Close only counts with horseshoes and hand grenades.

The Vikings, too, have been disappointing.  Quarterback Tavaris Jackson has been particularly disappointing, as he has been unable to make the big plays necessary to supplement a potent running game commanded by Adrian Peterson.

Jackson was benched by head coach Brad Childress as a result of his uninspiring play.  The Vikings turned to 37-year-old journeyman Gus Frerotte.

Other teams, such as the Dallas Cowboys, Pittsburgh Steelers, Green Bay Packers and Carolina Panthers have impressed.

The Dallas Cowboys offense has been running at full capacity.  The chemistry between quarterback Tony Romo and wide receiver Terrell Owens seems as strong as ever.

Given the varying results of teams around the league this season, it would be easy to take them seriously.

But it’s still so early.

Take the Detroit Lions and New York Giants from last season.

The Lions started the season at 6-2, but lost seven of their last eight games to finish at 7-9.  On the other hand, the Giants started last season 0-2 and went on to win the Super Bowl.

This is why the NFL plays 16 games instead of just two.  There’s still plenty of time for surprises.

Your power rankings for Week  3:

1.    Dallas Cowboys – The offense is great, and it’s not surprising.  But their defense is too porous.  This could pose as a problem again when Dallas faces another pass-happy offense in the Green Bay Packers.

2.    New York Giants – Man, do these guys look great.  Repeat anyone?

3.    Pittsburgh Steelers – Their last game was a little messy, but gale-force winds probably contributed more to their performance than their own mistakes.  The injury to quarterback Ben Roethlisberger is a little worrisome.

4.    Green Bay Packers – So far, it looks like the Packers made the right move this offseason with quarterback Aaron Rodgers.  After two games, he’s thrown four touchdowns and no interceptions.  However, the Packers have played two 0-2 teams up to this point.  Dallas will be their toughest test so far on Sunday night.

5.    Denver Broncos – Who new the Broncos had an offense?  Brandon Marshall was unstoppable in his first game back from suspension racking up 18 catches in Sunday’s win over San Diego.

6.    Carolina Panthers – The Panthers are impressive after two solid wins against physical defenses.  Quarterback Jake Delhomme is looking like his old self.

7.    New England Patriots – It was easy to notice that Tom Brady was absent in the Patriots’ game against the Jets.  But Matt Cassell was efficient, and that’s all he needs to be with weapons like Randy Moss and Wes Welker around him.

8.    Philadelphia Eagles – I know the Eagles lost.  But with an offense that potent, they’re still one of the top teams in the league in my book.

9.    Buffalo Bills – Trent Edwards has played well so far.  He played near perfect in last weekend’s 20-16 win against the Jaguars, completing 20 of 25 passes for 239 yards and a touchdown.

10.    Tennessee Titans – Who needs Vince Young, anyway?  Head coach Jeff Fisher has already said the veteran Kerry Collins will continue to be the starter as long as he plays well.  In his first start Sunday, he did just that completing 14 of 21 passes for one touchdown.
