Inside the intricate wood-worked dragonfly-emblazoned doors of the Dragonfly Theater & Pub, the owner is hard at work transforming the venue into a food and entertainment venue in the Town of Boone.

“We’re juggling all kinds of events here, live music, to movies, to fundraisers,” owner Sheri L. Baker said.

She hopes to increase popularity with an expanded menu, she said.

“It’s just starting to pick up as far as people realizing we have food,” Baker said. “And beer.”

“Three weeks ago we got our beer and wine license,” Baker said.

Dragonfly currently offers a “40s for $4” deal, which offers a 40 oz. Miller High Life for $4.

The menu’s expansion is continuing currently, but has already grown considerably since the establishment’s opening.

“[The first] two months we were open we only had concessions,” Baker said. “We still don’t have our pizza menu going, but we do have sandwiches, chili and nachos. We’re going to have hot dogs, bratwurst, stuff like that.”

Baker is expanding the movie repertoire as well as the menu.

“[The movies] are all new. The independent films we can get pretty quickly because Regal [Cinema] doesn’t show them,” Baker said. “The mainstream movies we just have to wait until Regal finishes. They just now finally let go of Batman, so now we can get it.”

In addition to movies and food, Baker plans on having a variety of other events.

“We hope to have live music every week,” Baker said. “We have a smoke-free, large venue, so it’s a good alternative to, I guess, Legends.”

Appalachian State University student Mike Alvarado and his band performed at Dragonfly and drew 220 people.

Tonight at 10 p.m., Winston-Salem rhythm & blues band Cookies & Cream will perform an 18 and up concert at Dragonfly.

“We are going to have a digital projector in the next couple of weeks,” Baker said. “Which will enable us to show anything on TV.”

Baker hopes to air sporting events and other television events with the projector.

“We already did a private showing of the ASU [v.] LSU game…so that was our first broadcast of a sporting event.”

Dragonfly will host other events like the Oct 9. Renewable Energy Initiative Fundraiser, which will feature live music and a showing of a locally-filmed snowboarding video Oct. 24.

“We’re doing a North Carolina beer tasting on [Oct. 23],” Baker said. “We’re highlighting North Carolina beer, so we’re really excited about that so we’ll have live music, all the vendors will be here, there will be bratwurst.”

Baker said she hopes Dragonfly offers things “you wouldn’t think twice about going to do.”
