Students who want to vote in the upcoming election and have not yet obtained an absentee ballot can register to vote in the Town of Boone.

“We encourage everyone to get educated to vote, and to use your American right to vote,” Grier said.

“Don’t take it for granted.”

Zach L. Grier is a sophomore political science major and Student Government Association’s director of civic engagement.

He said SGA has already had success this year with voter registration efforts, registering 100 to 200 students at the freshman “Picnic with the Peacocks” event, and 300 to 400 at the club expo table at the start of the semester.

The regular voting registration deadline is Oct. 10, while early voting, which involves one-stop registration, lasts from Oct. 20 to Nov. 1.

If students move from one residence hall to another after having registering at a previous residence, they must re-register this year in order vote.

Grier said students can drop by the SGA office on the second floor of Plemmons Student Union in order to retrieve the proper forms for registration.

Alternatively, students can visit the Watauga County Courthouse on West King Street to obtain a registration form.

The form itself asks a series of questions.  It asks applicants if they have established residency in North Carolina by living in the same location for 30 days prior to election day, and also asks for place of birth, Grier said.

He said it requires voters to list their full name, and to specify their place of residence.

Students living on campus can list their residence hall and room number to specify their residence.

Grier said the form also gives several options for the section regarding personal identification.

Voters can list the last four digits of their social security number, their North Carolina driver’s license number or their voter registration number, Grier said.

The option for providing one’s phone number is optional, but Grier said he encouraged students to list it so Board of Elections can contact them in case errors occur when filling out the form.

He said the board would not use the information to contact voters for any other reason.

For a question about mailing addresses, students who live either on campus or off campus have the option to list their Appalachian State University post office box number.

Those who live off campus can also list their street address.

Students who live on the east side of campus will vote in the Linville Falls room of the student union, while those who live on the west side will vote in Farthing Auditorium.

Grier said those who live off campus can contact him for their voting location.

His contact information is listed at sga.appstate.edu, under the “executive branch” menu.

He said voters do not need to bring their voter registration card to vote, but they must bring some form of photographic identification.

Grier said resident advisors and resident directors can contact him to set up a speaking event in their residence hall.
