Diversity abounds at ASU Print E-mail
Friday, 27 May 2005
The Office of Multicultural Student Development (MSD) at Appalachian State University commits itself to the purpose of advocacy, programming and cultural support for students, faculty and staff.
A part of the Center for Student Involvement and Leadership, MSD is located on the second floor of Plemmons Student Union. It offers a variety of programs and services for the campus community.
The Multicultural Center, located on the first floor of the student union, is coordinated by MSD. The center provides space for cultural group interaction, support and resources to cultural student groups and various educational programs and activities.
Throughout the year, MSD sponsors many programs and special events focused on diversity at Appalachian and to educate the campus about diverse topics.
Topics for the last academic year’s programs included hip-hop, racism, Latinos, rape, Muslim faith, disabilities and homosexuality. Famous personalities, such as Public Enemy rapper Chuck D, have been brought to Appalachian through MSD programs.
Also included in MSD’s services is information about gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender (GLBT) life at Appalachian. The GLBT Taskforce was created in 2002 to study concerns related to sexual orientation and the needs of the GLBT community at Appalachian State University.
“Diversity Educators” is an MSD program that trains and equips students to facilitate workshops and presentations on diversity-related issues and topics. Applications for this program are available on the MSD Web site.
The Diversity Celebration, held for the past several years each April, continues to grow as a popular event at Appalachian.
Free workshops, presentations, food, concerts and information sessions representing many cultures fill an entire day in the student union.
For more information, visit the MSD Web site.
