Faculty band Sunday’s Well and guest artists will perform a free Irish traditional music concert Thursday at 8 p.m. at the Rosen Concert Hall at Broyhill Music Center.

“[Irish traditional music] honed my ear and helped my ear in an incredible way,” professor of flute Nancy A. Schneeloch-Bingham said.

Sunday’s Well consists of Schneeloch-Bingham on flute and whistle; professor of composition, Sharpe Chair Scott R. Meister on bodhran, whistle and percussion; professor of music theory Gabe Fankhauser guitar and piano; professor of music education Liz Rose on Celtic harp; professor of music education.

Suzi W. Mills on acoustic bass and professor of art at Utah State University, Una Pett on fiddle.

The guest artists include Mary Mitchell-Ingoldsby on uillean pipes and Aoife Granville on flute, fiddle and voice.

“We formed originally as a trio in the late 90s and gradually we’ve added players to our group,” Schneeloch-Bingham said.

Meister began a study abroad program in Ireland that he still offers.

“After the first course, [the faculty] started an Irish group here when we got back.”

The related classes are Introduction to Irish Traditional Music and The Creative Process in Irish Traditional Music.

“[The students] don’t need to necessarily read music, but they have to have a proficiency on an instrument or in a musical area,” Schneeloch-Bingham said.

The class travels to University College Cork every May.

“Students get college credit for going over there and studying traditional music,” Schneeloch-Bingham said.

“In Ireland they have university colleges all around like we have state universities,” Meister said. “It’s the only university that offers a bachelor’s degree in Irish traditional music.”

The class first traveled to Ireland in 2002, followed by trips in 2004, 2006, 2007 and 2009. The group plans to return in 2009.

The class does more than just study, Meister said.

“We do Irish dancing while we’re there, and then every night we go to pubs,” he said.

In addition to the concert, today at 5 p.m. in room 214 of Broyhill Inn & Conference Center, Granville will leadan Irish Flute Workshop.

Today at 7 p.m. in the recital hall at Broyhill, Mitchell-Ingoldsby will  lead a uillean pipes workshop.

Tomorrow at 5 p.m. in room 225 of Broyhill, Granville will lead an Irish singing session. She is a native Irish speaker.

Friday at 4 p.m. in room 214 of Broyhill, Granville will lead a fiddle workshop.

Fiddle players are encouraged to bring their instruments.

“We don’t do it to make it money – we love Irish music,” Meister said. “We just love to play.”
