The Appalachian State University men’s soccer team dropped their second straight match Sunday, falling to Georgia Southern University 2-1.
Forward Arie Muniz scored in the seventh minute of regulation to give Appalachian an early 1-0 lead.
“Normally when you get an early goal, it’s a positive thing,” Muniz said. “You try to build on that.”

The Mountaineers’
renewed confidence failed to translate into any sort of scoring
insurance, however, as they took a lead of only one goal into halftime.
Appalachian’s
inability to put the game away finally caught up with them in the 69th
minute of regulation when Georgia Southern’s Fredrik Langseth tied the
game at one.
“It was very satisfying for us to get back into the game with that first goal,” Georgia Southern head coach Kevin Kennedy said.
GSU added another goal in the 78th minute to earn the victory.
Giving up two goals to blow an early lead left Appalachian looking for a stronger second half effort.
“We lacked desire out there today,” Muniz said. “They just outworked us in the second half.”
The
Mountaineers’ fast start momentarily helped erase the memory of last
week’s 2-1 loss to Elon University in what was a battle for first place
in the Southern Conference.
At 7-5 (2-2), ASU now has work to do to get back into the title mix.
“The key word for us right now is frustration,” head coach Shaun Pendleton said. “We’re finding ways to give games away.”
With just four seniors on the roster, the Mountaineers are trying to overcome mistakes that come with a youthful squad.
“We continue to make the same basic mistakes,” Pendleton said. “That’s the difficulty of having younger players.”
Appalachian will try to avoid a third straight loss tomorrow when they travel to Greenville, S.C. to take on Furman University.
A return to the program’s past struggles is also a concern.
“We have no leadership right now,” Pendleton said. “We’re in a slide right now that the seniors here seem to be used to.”
