Members of the Campus Anti-War Network, C.A.N. assembled on Sanford Mall Thursday to engage in a peace rally.

Approximately 12 students came together in a small circle on the mall to discuss how to become more peaceful individuals in society.

“This doesn’t have to be are you for or against war, are you Democrat or Republican; this is about being a peaceful person and being happy,” Prime Minister of the network John B. Fortenberry said.

This is the first year the organization is recognized as an Appalachian State University club, however, Fortenberry said the organization has been active for three years.

“We wanted to bring people together in a peaceful way because there is so much tension, especially right now during the elections,” Secretary of the network Leah E. Wilson said.

In the past, the club has organized an anti-war rally, which was held last March on the mall, as well as a Sept. 11, 2001 film series.

“As long as people just see us, we are choosing to be peaceful and take that way of life and not let the bad things that are going on in the world and maybe even in our community affect how we live,” Fortenberry said.

The group plans to host an upcoming anti-war rally, to be announced.

“[Peace] resides in yourself and we talk about that in our meetings,” Fortenberry said. “The way to make other people feel peaceful is not by saying ‘Hey, stop being a war monger, choose peace,’ you have to choose peace for yourself and let those vibes spread.”

The organization also plans to raise more awareness on the Appalachian campus about Darfur and Sudan, sophomore elementary education major Jessica M. O’Hara said.

The club currently meets once a week at Beanstalk Coffee House, located on King Street, Wednesdays at 8 p.m.

There are an estimated 15 active members.

“As an organization, we definitely focus on being against military wars and things like that, but we are also trying to step up our activism against the war on drugs and the war on poverty and all of the wars that exist right now,” Fortenberry said.
