New vertical driver licenses for drivers under the age of 21 were created earlier this month to help store clerks differentiate from those over 21.
While clerks agreed it could help, some convenience store workers feel more changes could be made.
“The problem with the new licenses is when they are in a wallet, the date of birth is usually hidden in the bottom corner,” Nick D. Friedman, a worker in a Boone convenience store said. “It’s a good idea, but the date of birth is in the extreme corner."
Friedman said the new licenses have plenty of room due to the rearrangement of the picture.
“They could put the birth date more in the center, and make the font at around size 14 or 20,” he said. “Its just hard to read.”
Students said they are fairly unaffected by the new changes, and the changes will not affect their ability to obtain alcohol.
“I mean,
there isn’t really a point to the changes,” Taylor N. Davis, sophomore
advertising major, said. “People have other ways of buying alcohol.”
The alterations came earlier this month after lawmakers pushed for the changes to curb underage sales.
The new licenses have yellow borders for those under 18, and have a red border for those under 21.
“This is
an effort within North Carolina to further protect our young drivers,”
Marge Howell, Department of Motor Vehicles of North Carolina
spokesperson said. “We just want to help the clerks behind the counter
to see the age right off the bat.”
Friedman said if changes were made to the font and the location of the birth date, he would be happier.
“It is a
help, but it does need those two little changes,” Friedman said. “Just
center the date of birth and blow that puppy up to a bigger size.”
