Tonight on “Mischief Night,” the Dragonfly Theater and Pub presents “a perfect opportunity to unleash your sexual side and get a little kinky with your fellow Transylvanians.”
The first showing of “The Rocky Horror Picture Show” begins at 9:30 p.m. and the second shows at midnight.
The movie focuses on a young, clean-cut couple that find themselves in a time warp, stranded at the mansion of transsexual Dr. Frank N. Furter.
Made up of musical
numbers and men in drag, “The Rocky Horror Picture Show” has gathered a
cult following since its release in 1975.
William
B. Connelly, senior technical photography major, has been a fan of the
film for over seven years, has seen it live in theatres over 50 times,
and knows the Time Warp by heart.
“There
was always something appealing about the cult-classic vibe that RHPS
[Rocky Horror Picture Show] has to offer,” Connelly said. “Everything
from the audience participation to the costumes and the ‘virgin’ status
of people who have never seen RHPS live in a theater are all aspects of
the cult following that excite me.”
He plans to attend the movie’s midnight showing.
“There
is the possibility that I will dress up, but not necessarily as one of
the characters,” Connelly said. “I’m a huge fan of audience
participation so I will come equipped with verbal cues, rice, playing
cards, and toilet paper.”
Audience
participation is a vital part of the RHPS tradition and there may be
audience participation kits available at the theatre, April C. Horton,
director of the Appalachian Fund said.
“Whatever
props people want to use must be in the constraints of what the theatre
will allow, because I read that people throw wet things,” Horton said.
“Students are encouraged to bring umbrellas because we may be throwing
confetti.”
Sponsored by the Mountaineer Fund, proceeds of the event go towards the purchase of wind turbines for the senior class gift.
Caroline
E. Stamatakis, senior biology major and one of the four students
organizing the event, said last year the Mountaineer Fund asked
students for video submissions on what they wanted the senior class
gift to support.
Students
voted on the videos and the most popular video was about supporting the
Renewable Energy Initiative, REI wind turbine project.
This semester, Stamatakis said they wanted to have an event sometime around the end of October.
“‘The
Rocky Horror Picture Show’ is something that goes hand in hand with
Halloween,” Stamatakis said. “It is a good way to get into the
Halloween spirit and also to raise money for a good cause.”
Sheri
Baker, owner of the Dragonfly and Appalachian State University alumna,
is excited to collaborate with the Mountaineer Fund, Horton said.
“The
Dragonfly is usually not open as late as the double-feature will run,”
Horton said. “But Sheri is very enthusiastic. It should be a great
time.”
Horton also said wine, beer, and light refreshments will be for sale.
“Dragonfly
is just the right theater to show RHPS at and I would like to see it
happen a couple times a month,” Connelly said. “It would definitely
give people an alternative option for their Friday nights. After all,
I’m sure there are people out there who want to get a little rowdy and
yell at the movie to ‘Lick it Lips’ in the opening credits and
‘Peek-a-boo’ at the sight of Columbia’s nipple.”
To
purchase tickets, which are $7 in advance and $10 at the door, Horton
said students can visit the contact table today from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.,
or by e-mailing the Mountaineer Fund at
