The sport of golf is unlike any other.
While most coaches place a heavy emphasis on teamwork, the athletes on the Appalachian State University men’s golf team are considered successful as individuals.
With tournaments and invitationals being held in locations other than the High Country, the team finds themselves traveling frequently to courses far across the state. By attending matches in Florida, South Carolina, and Sunset Beach, one is often left to wonder if the team’s approach to the game differs from others.
According to ASU
head coach Bill Dicus, the team’s approach to playing golf is not much
different than other schools. The players’ get accustom to the colder
climate of Boone and also have the luxury of practicing locally.
“It’s
convenient that the team can practice at Boone Golf Club”, Dicus said.
“Some teams don’t have the advantage we do and it’s not uncommon to
have teams traveling hours away to practice or prepare.”
Boone
Golf Club helps prepare the team greatly by being one of the toughest
courses in North Carolina. The golf club has a shorter distance than
the average course and takes great patience and skill to play on.
“It’s a course for shot makers,” Dicus said. “You can’t just drive the ball down the green, it takes precision and accuracy.”
One of
the main concerns for the team is the different grasses that are played
upon. With each course having a different terrain, it becomes a
challenge for players to find their stroke during play.
Although
the last invitational of the year was played November 3-4, the Southern
Conference Championship will not commence until April 19-21 in
Florence, S.C.
