Scripture misinterprets gay marriage Print E-mail

 by EMILY DUNN

I grew up in a family with a father for a minister and a mother for a preacher.

Within this lifestyle I had always been taught specific rights from wrongs.

I was taught a man should always marry a woman.

Never was there a time where my parents told me a man could marry a man or a woman could marry a woman for love.

I have now been married for little over a year and am completely in love with my situation. Though the quote “marriage is not for everyone” stands out, I begin to wonder about those who wish to be in my situation and cannot because of their gender relations.

According to the Bible, life began with the union of Adam and Eve — man and woman. Nowhere within the realms of the story of

Eden does the Bible mention “Adam and Steve” or “Ally and Eve.” This has been taught to many as a basis for an argument against same-sex marriages.

In Leviticus 18:22,24 it says, “Thou shall not lie with mankind, as with womankind, it is abomination. Defile not ye yourselves in any of these things.” Is this quote a good back up for an argument against same-sex marriages?

Dr. James Dobson has published many articles encouraging Christians to stand on the opposition of gay marriage on focusonthefamily.com. One specific letter found is called “Marriage on the Mind.”

In this letter, Dobson “preaches to the choir” about all the obscene occurrences that will take place if gay marriage becomes legal.

Not only does he begin the letter with the precaution for his friends to read carefully, but also to make sure they understand the urgency of the matter.

Same-sex marriages are a “fatal blow to the traditional family,” Dobson said. The question is, where are the Christians that oppose the “conservative” views?

It is a complicated subject to many people. For me, I was raised with the ideas implanted in my head that gay marriage was wrong.

According to one verse in the Bible, homosexuality is a sin. However, according to many friends and acquaintances I have acquired, it is a lifestyle.

It is a bit obscene for the Christian community to impugn homosexuals of sin  when all humans act “sinfully” daily.  For example: pride, selfishness, and impurity are sins that are found in nearly every person.

If we choose as Christians to focus on same-sex marriages, should we not focus on forbidding all other sins as well?
Paul said, “Let every person be in subjection to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those which exist are established by God,” Romans 13:1.

Paul is saying that ultimately judgment comes from God -- not from peers or from individuals within the government.

Regardless if same-sex marriages are legal or not, the final judgment will be between a person and his or her maker.

Misty S. Irons of MusingsOn.com said, “[S]ometimes the best witness to the gospel is as simple as being civil enough to respect people’s legitimate freedoms, and being decent enough to put aside the name-calling and treat people like human beings.

Supporting the civil liberties of homosexual American citizens is decent, civil and, yes, loving.”

Civil marriages between man and man, or woman and woman should be allowed.

It is based simplistically on love, and realistically on the way the world is moving as of right now.

If heterosexuals are allowed to partake in the wonderful legality we call marriage, then so should homosexuals.

Perhaps it is a different lifestyle, but everyone has a right to their freedom of choice — whether that choice is to marry someone of the opposite sex or the same sex.

You can only find one verse about about homosexuality in the Bible? How hard did you look? Not very. There are at least 8 verses from Genesis, Leviticus, Romans, Chronicles, and I Timothy that speak about homosexuality being sinful in nature and an abomination to God. Don't be fooled - having friends who practice the homosexual lifestyle does not change Biblical truths. Just as adultery and fornication are offensive to God, so is homosexuality and the practice of other sins isn't acceptable either. God knows we are sinful in nature, but He doesn't accept our wills. He commands us to seek forgiveness and repent of those sins, i.e., turn from those sinful practices and return to God, not man. Your excuses for 'gay' marriage are pitiful at best even without a Biblical viewpoint. Your friends and acquaintances do not define morals and what is and is not sinful. I'm pretty sure the Bible does a good job of that. But, unless your father is an Episcopalian or Universalist minister, you may want to ask him about your moral convictions and understanding of God's word.

For thousands of years, marriage has been defined by countless cultures as the union of a man and woman. And more specifically, that union was formed as a foundation to grow and protect the future generations of the man and woman. In other words, marriage is an institution for children, not an institution for adults as the gay advocates would have everyone believe. To see the hallmarks of 'gay' marriage, no one need look any further than The Netherlands and their very liberal policies on marriage. Since the establishment of 'gay' marriage (or the destruction of traditional marriage) more than a decade ago, traditional marriages have decreased significantly, cohabitation has skyrocketed while birth rates have plummeted. And what births do occur, a high percentage are out-of-wedlock.

As for forbidding other sins, we do that all the time. We punish people for murder, theft, drunkenness, slander, rape, incest, deceit, etc. So what's your point here? Though our legal code may not call them 'sins', there's no doubt there's a moral tinge to those crimes and punishments. Moral relativity does not change absolute truths of the Bible. You're trying to place your worldview into the Bible when it should be vice versa.

We should all be applauding CA, FL, and AR in their efforts to stop the gay agenda in their states. After all, the people have spoken and isn't that what our country's about?
