Bottlecap article inaccurate
I felt the article in the Nov. 11 publication of The Appalachian, “Students collect caps despite possible hoax” misrepresented the actual facts of a fundraising effort for a worthwhile cause.
The article portrayed the bottle cap collecting efforts as a hoax.
The article linked
the bottle cap collecting to an American Cancer Society’s claim of a
hoax. However, I never in any way linked this collecting effort to the
ACS. In fact, the efforts are not at all related to the ACS. I am
unsure where the reporter made that connection.
The
specific details are as follows: bottle caps are still being collected
by InterVarsity and other organizations around campus, the bottle caps
will be taken to Westwood Elementary School in West Jefferson where
they will be sent to Ashe County High School’s ROTC for recycling.
The money collected from the recycling will then be sent to the cancer patients for their treatments.
I am
disappointed The Appalachian portrayed such a worthwhile cause in such
an inaccurate and unfortunate way. I just hope that readers will
continue to collect bottle caps and not throw away any they have
already collected.

Students miss beat with fee increase forum
I am disappointed students did not and have not expressed concern about fees increasing for the 2009-10 school year.
As an
issue that impacts all 15,871 students on this campus (not to mention
parents’ pockets as well), there has been little or no outrage. When an
issue like smoking on campus comes up that impacts not even half of the
15,871, there is total outrage by students.
I am disappointed in my fellow students to not questions increases and demand justifications.
With
such tight economic times, it will not be easy for students who attend
class/study/work to pay more, or for parents who help their children
through school who are having to face foreclosures or possible
layoffs.
I wish students would have taken to heart these issues that affect everyone, all 15,871 mountaineers.
