Campus radio station WASU will move its broadcasting center from Wey Hall to a new building off the corner of Depot Street and Rivers Street after the Boone Town Council approved a request to rezone the property Nov. 20.
The new broadcast building, tentatively named the George G. Beasley Broadcasting Complex, is set to open spring 2010.
“We’re all very
excited about it. Most of us will have graduated at that point, but
it’s definitely going to be a bigger part of being more involved as
alumni,” Station Manager and electronic media broadcasting major
Brendan P. Croghan said.
The new station will feature the main on-air studio, as well as a duplicate room for students to practice their DJ skills.
“With
this new facility, there will be more room for students to get hands on
with the station, not only with the bigger studio and more equipment,
but with more editing suites for video and audio,” Croghan said. “There
will be a great opportunity to provide space and equipment for students
to get hands on with the station.”
The new
complex will give the station the opportunity to broadcast through high
definition radio, allowing the broadcast of two shows simultaneously as
well as higher quality.
“We hope
to become an HD quality station, which can lead to a WASU HD-2 station.
This is still a year or two out, however,” Dan Hill, faculty advisor
and general manager of WASU said.
The new facility will allow the station to keep their same programming and add more shows and more special event coverage.
“We’ll
remain all student run with specialty programming. We can have
bluegrass shows one semester and jazz the next,” Hill said. “All of
this will remain the same and we’ll have more.”
The new complex has been in the works for three to four years, Hill said.
“We’re
all just happy to see that Boone could potentially put itself on the
map as the home of future broadcasters with this new facility,” Croghan
said.
