Administration encourages activism
Dear Appalachian Students,
Welcome back! Our campus is at its best when you are here. As we have done for many years, we begin spring semester by celebrating Martin Luther King Jr.’s national holiday.
For many, it is a day off, enjoying family and friends, perhaps working, maybe skiing down the beautiful Appalachian Mountains.
For others it will
be a day of service to our community, as they participate in the MLK
Challenge, an event that honors Dr. King’s memory by helping others.
When we
return to class on Tuesday, January 20th, our Appalachian community
will be celebrating the 25th Martin Luther King Commemoration and the
Inauguration of the 44th President of the United States.
This
will indeed be a special day on our campus and we encourage you to take
time to participate in the events taking place at Appalachian to honor
Dr. King’s legacy and to celebrate the installation of President Barack
Obama.
One year
ago, on Martin Luther King Day, 2008, Barack Obama spoke at Ebenezer
Baptist Church in Atlanta, Ga., quoting Dr. King he said, “Unity is the
great need of the hour.”
Obama continued, defining the need for unity in this way –“ I’m
talking about an inability to recognize ourselves in one another; to
understand that we are our brother’s keeper; we are our sister’s
keeper, that, in the words of Dr. King, we are all tied together in a
single garment of destiny.”
This in
our minds affirms the Appalachian Way, and we are hopeful as we face a
challenging year on our campus, in our State, our nation, our world,
that we will move forward together, far more united by our common
humanity than divided by our differences.
It is our hope that through this unity, we will face our differences with civility and respect.
Best wishes for a productive and fulfilling 2009.
