Overweight, unemployed, and without a home.

Sound familiar?

Humans weren’t the only ones struggling to get by last year.

Anything with fur, fins, or flippers never failed to keep the world smiling during 2008.

Weighing an incredible 44 pounds, colossal kitty Prince Chuck found himself in a New Jersey animal shelter when his owner’s house was foreclosed.

After making his debut on Good Morning America and other talk shows, Prince Chunk pulled the heartstrings of millions of viewers before landing himself a new home in New Jersey and a new low-carb diet.

Prince Chuck was not the only furry critter to arouse the attention of the media.

President-elect Barack Obama’s decision for what kind of puppy he should bring into the White House led to petitions from 50,000 concerned citizens who tried to persuade Obama to invest in a puppy from the shelter for his daughters.

“Our preference would be to get a shelter dog, but a lot of shelter dogs are mutts like me,” Obama said. Obama still remains undecided.

All jokes aside, the Watauga Humane Society, a local animal shelter, saw a decrease in the number of animals being adopted during 2008.

“Because of the poor economy, adoptions have dropped off a bit in the last few months, but not significantly,” Nicole A. Carper, assistant manager for the Watauga Humane Society, said.

She remains hopeful adoption rates will remain steady in 2009.
