As the new year starts, not everything is a blank slate.

While it’s no secret that our country’s economy has seen better times, the war in Iraq also continues.

Here’s a quick look at the war to date:

In 2008, United States spending was $5,000 per second according to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid in May 5, 2008, as quoted by Deborah White in her article “Iraq War Results and Statistics at January 4, 2009."

According to the Congressional Research Service, cost of deploying one United States soldier for one year in Iraq was $390,000.

So far, there are 75 major United States bases in Iraq, according to The New York Times.

In White’s article, it is recorded 4,222 of United States Troops were killed, 136 journalists were murdered in Iraq, and 8,844 Iraqi police and soldiers were killed. Fifty-four percent of the United State troop casualties were under the age of 25.
