The Samaritan’s Purse headquarters in Boone welcomed the Vice President of Sudan, Salva Kiir Mayardit Jan. 7 as he thanked the organization for their work in the war-torn country.

Salva Kirr Mayardit is both the Vice President of Sudan and the President of South Sudan.

Sudan has been involved in a deadly civil war, where up to 300,000 people have died and more than 2 million have fled their homes since 2003, according to www.bbc.co.uk.

Vice President Kiir’s journey to the United States included a visit to Washington, D.C. for a visit with President George W. Bush to thank him for support and to discuss continuing plans for peace in the region.

While in Boone, Vice President Kiir participated in a press conference with Franklin Graham, president and CEO of Samaritan’s Purse and the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association.

Welcoming the president, Graham called him a friend of Samaritan’s Purse.

Samaritan’s Purse is the organization responsible for Operation Christmas Child, Children’s Heart Project and many other aid projects since its inception in 1970.

It rebuilt 227 churches and assisted during Sudan’s civil war, according to samaritanspurse.org.

The organization is also working on a Bible school in the region, as well as 110 more churches.

Vice President Kiir extended his thanks for strengthening the faith of Christian believers in Sudan.

“We came to tell him thank you,” President Kiir said. “We will never forget about you.”
