Appalachian State University student Rocky A. Pearson was found dead at his Blowing Rock residence on R.C. Cook Road Sunday from a gunshot wound to the head.
According to the Watauga County Sheriff’s Office incident and investigation report, the wound was inflicted by a Glock 45 handgun at approximately 3:36 a.m.
As of press time,
it is unknown if the wound was self-inflicted accidentally or
purposely, as the incident is still under investigation by the Watauga
County Sheriff.
Pearson, a senior criminal justice major originally from Shelby, was born Nov. 25, 1986.
“He was very passionate about criminal justice,” mother Lavonda Pearson said. “He had few friends, but they were all close.”
Pearson’s mother said he was interested in motorcycles and auto parts, but was fascinated by many subjects.
“The one thing he tried to do was excel at everything he could do,” his mother said. “He never wanted to give up.”
Tim J. Mcfarland, senior anthropology major who attended high school with Pearson spoke about Pearson’s genuine personality.
“He was
a good guy who had a really dry sense of humor I really appreciated,”
Mcfarland said. “Him and his roommate were the only two guys who signed
my high school yearbook.”
A memorial book will be placed in Plemmons Student Union Monday and will be available for students to sign through Feb. 9.
Condolences may also be sent to Dwayne and Lavonda Pearson and Tammy Moore, 124 Kelly Jo Lane Shelby, N.C. 28150.
Flowers or memorials may be made to the department of government and justice studies at Appalachian.
Pearson’s death is the second student death the university has experienced this academic year.
