As many on-campus construction projects begin winding down, others are emerging from their blueprints.

With drafts of the campus Master Plan completed and implementation of the project in the works, students, staff and visitors alike will continue to see a conversion from the old and run-down to the new and improved.

Rooftops will be repaired, utilities will be renovated and new buildings will take the place of those that are no longer adequate.

Rivers Street Cafe

The second phase of the new Central Dining Facility is currently underway.

The old Welborn Cafeteria will be torn down and a new building will be constructed in its place.

The building will provide an additional 400 seats for the Central Dining Facility.

The remainder of the site will be transformed into a continuation of green space on Sanford Mall.

The project is expected to be complete by January 2010.

 On-campus Housing

Frank Residence Hall is being renovated and will be open for occupation next semester.

Coffey Residence Hall will be torn down and replaced by a larger residence hall that will allow more room for a larger number of students.

Cone Residence Hall is soon to undergo the renovation process, as well.

“We’re trying to look at all the land we own and asking ourselves how we’ll use that land in the future,” Lovins said. “We’re just going to see what unfolds.”

Kidd Brewer Stadium

A new football field house is expected to be complete this summer for occupation by the first football game of next season.

A stadium restroom facility is also being added and will be located on the grassy bank above the far goal post. The restroom facility will also be finished by football season.

Underground Steam System

The renovation of the underground steam system began several years ago.

The part of the system by the new Central Dining Facility was recently finished and renovation will begin along Rivers Street by Edwin Duncan Hall.

“Sometimes you walk around campus and see steam coming out of the ground,” Greg M. Lovins, vice chancellor of Business Affairs said. “That’s not supposed to happen.”

Reconstruction of the system will prevent leakage and will allow the steam to be reused via an underground recycling system.

Lovins said though it may take several years to complete, it will conserve energy and save money.

Future Projects

Kraut Creek will eventually be day lighted. Currently, it runs underneath Raley Parking Lot.

After part of the parking lot is uprooted, engineers will align the creek closer to Rivers Street.

Though some parking will be lost at Raley, 50 additional parking spaces will be added behind the Holmes Convocation Center.

By 2020, when the Master Plan is expected to be complete, new facilities for the College of Nursing and Health, College of Fine and Applied Arts and research will be built.

All residence halls will have undergone renovation and the Lucy Brock Child Development Center, L.S. Dougherty Hall, I.G. Greer Auditorium and Edwin Duncan Hall will also sport new looks.

Reich College of Education building

Edwin Duncan Hall, which currently houses the Department of Education, will eventually be demolished after the transition to the new Reich College of Education building.

The area where the building will be located, adjacent to the University Post Office and Counseling & Psychological Center, is currently undergoing site development.

The design is finished and proposal for construction was approved, including the construction of a green roof.

Builders will begin work by May and the goal for completion is spring 2011.
