The Elon University women's basketball team earned its first
Southern Conference victory of the season tonight, trouncing Appalachian State
University 73-55.
The Phoenix led throughout the entire game, seizing control
in the first half with a 12-2 opening run.
Elon's full court defense created 12 turnovers in the first
half, which turned into 12 Phoenix points.
When ASU did manage to get a shot off, they rarely fell. The
Mountaineers shot 32 percent from the field in the first half, while
going 0-8 from 3-point range and getting to the foul line only once.
After finding little success anywhere on the court
offensively, Appalachian often found itself trying to catch up with a Phoenix
offense that managed 12 fast break points.
Elon took a 36-21 lead into halftime.
Though it was clear before the second half even started that
it wasn't ASU's night, the Mountaineers continued to fight until the final
horn.
Appalachian was led by freshman forward Catherine Williams,
who logged a career-high 17 points while pulling down seven rebounds.
Senior forward Brittany Mixon, who registered a
double-double with 17 points and 13 rebounds, and freshman guard Canesha
Edwards, who tallied 13 points, were the only other Mountaineers in double
figures.
The strong play of Mixon, Edwards, and Williams proved to be
cold comfort for an ASU squad visibly upset at its performance.
All-in-all Elon outscored Appalachian 21-5 from the foul
line, 25-17 off the bench, 16-8 on fast breaks, 24-15 off of turnovers, and
44-32 in the paint.
Head coach Darcie Vincent declined interviews after the
game.
With the win, Elon moves to 3-22 overall with a 1-15 SoCon
record.
