The Lees-McRae College women’s tennis team has a board posted in their training facility that lists their team goals for this season.
One of those goals was to win all of their home matches.
That dream came to an end Tuesday night when the Appalachian State University Mountaineers defeated the Bobcats 6-1.
“I think we did
really well,” head coach Colin Crothers said. “[Lees-McRae is] a much
improved team. They’re very strong at the top.”

In No. 1
singles, the Bobcats scored their only point of the match with Gabriela
Celi defeating Appalachian’s Monica Tomas in two sets, 6-2, 6-1.
But the
Mountaineers fought back when Amanda Cash took out Christine Vanard at
the No. 2 spot in a closely contested match that ended in two sets with
a tiebreaker, 6-2, 5-7(10-5).
“[Vanard] just kept getting every ball back. I just had to stay patient and make sure I made the right decisions,” Cash said.
At No. 3, the Mountaineers tallied another win with Blakely Bean defeating Lyndsay Pegram 6-0, 6-3.
Appalachian’s
Olivia Stannard beat Ashley Mayers 6-1, 6-0 at No. 4 singles and Laura
Janke defeated Cameron Joyce at No. 5 6-3, 6-1.
“I was
really, really nervous in the first set,” Janke said. “This is my first
time playing in the singles lineup. I’m usually a doubles player.”
In the sixth and final singles match of the day, Appalachian’s Heather Prior claimed the 6-0, 6-1 victory over Katie Hawkins.
In the No. 1 doubles spot, Stannard and Bean defeated Vanard and Pegram in a tiebreaker 9-8 (7-4).
The Bobcats’ Celi and Joyce won over Cash and Prior of the Mountaineers 8-6 at the No. 2 spot.
Appalachian wrapped up the doubles point with Janke and Tomas taking out Mayers and Hawkins at No. 3, 8-1.
With the win, Appalachian moved to 1-3 in the early season.
