Women’s lacrosse weathers rough start to season Print E-mail

Much like the men’s team, things haven’t exactly gone as planned so far this season for Appalachian State University’s women’s club lacrosse team.

“I think it’s kind of hard to tell,” club president and freshman psychology major Elizabeth H. Willette said of how the season was going so far. “The season itself probably doesn’t look very good so far, but I think the team itself is doing well.”

Of the team’s four scheduled games, ASU has only been able to play in two because of poor weather.

“The game against [North Carolina State University] was cancelled, and we usually beat them,” Willette said. “Our first game, Wake, was cancelled and we probably could have beaten them, too.”

The two games Appalachian was able to participate in were against teams Willette said were in the top tier of their conference, Davidson College and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

The Mountaineers lost 12-4 and 11-4, respectively, to each team.

Against Davidson Feb. 14, Willette said the Mountaineers played the entire game with only 11 healthy players, the bare minimum required to field a team in a game, because of team injuries and the absence of some players because of plans they had made for Valentine’s Day.

“We were playing the whole game, and we were exhausted second half,” sophomore communication disorders major Erin E. Brawley said of the matchup.

The Mountaineers were also playing with a new goalie, who often doesn’t have the advantage of practicing in goal.

“She did pretty well for her first time in goal though,” Willette said.

Despite the loss, the team was optimistic.

“It was our first game back, but I think we learned a lot from it,” sophomore recreation major Grace. A Cleworth said of the Mountaineers’ first game back on the field since last season.

In the Mountaineers’ game against UNC, the Mountaineers were playing against a team which contains players who weren’t able to play on the varsity team.

Unlike UNC, many ASU players were playing lacrosse for the first time because they don’t have varsity teams to feed from.

The weather was also poor for Appalachian, an element Willette said the team wasn’t used to because the team spends most of its practices indoors.

“It was just really cold and windy,” Willette said. “It made throwing really hard.”

The team kept a positive mindset despite losing its opening two games.

“I think we’re improving,” Cleworth said. “But I think it’s really important that we start working on things outside of practice. People really need to go take the initiative to go and condition and really work out.”

Cleworth said finding individual practice time shouldn’t be difficult.

“It’s not that hard,” she said. “There’s plenty of brick walls on campus.”

Finding time to do just that shouldn’t be difficult for the Mountaineers, as they have a month-long break before playing again.

Appalachian returns to the playing field March 21 at 2 p.m. against UNC in Boone.
