Things didn’t start well for Appalachian State University’s
baseball team Friday night, as starting pitcher Matt Andress gave up five runs
in the first inning of an 8-6 loss to ElonUniversity.
The first inning deficit put the Mountaineers in a hole from which they never recovered.
Andress pitched four innings and gave up seven runs, nine
hits and four walks in more than 100 pitches.
After Andress was relieved at the end of the fourth inning, Nick
Daniels stepped to the mound and was somewhat effective, allowing only one run in
three innings of play.
Chris Patterson helped finish the game out for ASU.
One of the highlights of the night for the Mountaineers at
the plate came from third baseman Isaac Harrow.
Harrow went 4-5, scoring
one run while driving in another.
Catcher Jeremy Dowdy went 1-4 at the plate and scored two
runs. The freshman had the only home run of the night for ASU.
Also scoring two runs for the Mountaineers was second
baseman Wes Hobson, who went 1-5 at the plate.
Leading the way at the plate for Elon were Cory Harrilchak
and Justin Tilt, who went 3-5 and 3-4, respectively.
Hilt drove in two runs while scoring another.
Elon pitcher Jimmy Reyes earned the win for the Phoenix, bring his record
to 1-0.
The win drops the Mountaineers to 4-2 and hands them their
first conference loss of the season.
Elon advanced to 3-2 and earned its first conference
victory.
