A newborn local indie rock band is readying an east coast tour and career, all while nurturing a long-distance friendship between band members.
“Palm Trees started in Charlotte, at a party in October,” drummer Charlie Weeks said. “We’re four people that have been friends for probably the past five or six years and have always meant to play music together and finally got around to it.”
Palm Trees consists of Phil Pucci on guitar and lead vocals, David Scanlon on guitar, Patrick Doherty on bass, and Weeks on drums and backup vocals.
The band, Weeks
said, operates long-distance, but the lack of proximity is worth it as
the project has been something the group wanted to do for some time.
“We
practice in Hickory,” Weeks said. “Two of us live in Charlotte, two of
us live in Boone. But, we’ve known each other for awhile and we all
have similar tastes in music, so we got together. Now we’re doing what
we can.”
The band is in fledgling stages and looking toward taking things further.
“We’re
trying to take it somewhere, definitely,” Weeks said. “We’re just
trying to please people, right now. We’re trying to write music that we
think people will enjoy.”
The band is being taken in any direction that will be beneficial, Weeks said.
“We
don’t really have any motive – we’re playing a show in Charlotte soon
that’s a human rights show,” he said. “That’s not really what we’re all
about, but we jumped at the chance.”
The band is booking shows in Boone, Weeks said.
They hope to play The Dragonfly Theater and Pub sometime in the next couple months.
At the beginning of the summer, the band is planning a tour of the east coast.
Dates will include several in North Carolina, Washington D.C., Baltimore and New York.
The band also has recorded material available.
“Actually,
we’re not selling it at the time, we’re giving it away for free and
accepting donations,” Weeks said. “It’s a three-song demo. We recorded
it in Charlotte.”
The demo is available for streaming on the band’s MySpace.
“Probably
within the next two or three days… we’ll have a system where you can
download the high-quality demo for free from our Web site.”
The demo is available exclusively for download, however, if you want a CD, Weeks said, e-mail the band and they will send one.
Albums
“Marquee Moon” by Television, “Regulate the Chemicals” by
Twothirtyeight or “Turn on the Bright Lights” by Interpol are examples
of music that has influenced the band, Weeks said.
If given the chance to play with any musician alive or dead, Weeks said, the band would collectively probably choose Radiohead.
