The women’s tennis team of Appalachian State University will look to avenge last season’s loss to Gardner-Webb University when they take on the Bulldogs at Bob Light Tennis Complex, Saturday at 1 p.m.

The Runnin’ Bulldogs barely pulled out a win against the Mountaineers, 4-3, in their last meeting.

“I think we’re a stronger team this year,” head coach Colin Crothers said. “We’re young, that’s something that hurts us right now, but I think we have the talent to beat them.”

Appalachian is 3-10 on the season, but the majority of their conference matches still lay ahead.

“We’ve been struggling at the top positions, but we’re very solid down at the bottom,” Crothers said. “It’s just a matter of taking them to the bottom and stealing a doubles point or winning one or two up top.”

Junior Caroline Mauch has been competing at the number four position during her last four matches. Going into today, Mauch is the only Mountaineer with a winning record at 6-5.

“Every match I try to be safe and aggressive at the same time,” Mauch said. “Not going for the line but not just pushing back either, and that’s been working pretty well.”

The Mountaineers have been doing most of their hitting this season at Yonahlossee Resort and Club, but with warmer weather arriving in Boone, ASU will have their first outside home game on campus this season at Bob Light Tennis Complex located off Rivers Street.

“It’s very nice that we don’t have to be indoors,” Crothers said. “Yonahlossee is a private club, so our court time is limited depending on the members and the clinics that they have there. Just playing outside helps us out a lot.”

Appalachian has only had two home games this season out of 13 matches.

Their road-heavy schedule at the beginning of the season has set the Mountaineers up to play seven out of their next 10 matches at home.

“It’s gonna make a huge difference,” Crothers said. “We’re going to get into our conference schedule coming up, and playing here, the altitude helps us because the ball flies a little bit more.”

Following Appalachian’s match against Gardner-Webb Saturday, the Mountaineers will host Wofford University Tuesday and Furman University Wednesday.
