To help local women get through the day-to-day hardships of life, the Appalachian State University and Boone communities are teaming together to dance the night away.

The High Country Women’s Fund is holding POP Rocks!, their first 80s-themed concert and dance party Thursday at Dragonfly Theater & Pub.

Doors open at 9 p.m. and the party continues until midnight.

Tickets are $10 in advance at the Jean Pool, Black Bear Books, Dragonfly or at the door for $15.

The High Country Women’s Fund raises money to help deserving women in the High Country area.

Erin Thompson, co-chairwoman of the High Country Women's Fund, poses with a POP Rocks! event poster. HCWF will have an 80s-themed fundraiser at Dragonfly Theater & Pub Thursday. Photo Special to The Appalachian.

“We work to help women achieve self-sufficiency,” Erin M. Thompson, one of the organizers of the event said. “A lot of what we do is fill-in-the-gap grants: eyeglasses, tires, small things that wouldn’t be a big deal for you and me, but this kind of financial roadblock could really hinder some women’s progress and the progress of their children.”

The Women’s Fund holds an additional program called the Power of the Purse each year, a formal luncheon and jewelry auction that raises money for the fund.

“With this spring fundraiser, we are trying to reach out to a younger crowd,” Thompson said. “We want younger women to know that they can be involved, even if they aren’t rich and able to write big checks. We want this to be an all-encompassing group.”

The band for the evening will be the design, a Raleigh-based band currently touring to promote their album “Laziest Perfectionist.”

The band started as a cover band, but recently released “Laziest Perfectionist” as their first original album, drummer C. Bryan Smith said.

Vocalist and keyboarder, Risa Patterson is an Appalachian alumna and tHE.DESIGN hopes to “tap into the Boone audience,” Smith said.

POP Rocks! will consist mostly of 80s hits, but the band plans to also perform some of their original pieces, which Smith describes as “rock with an upbeat pop twist.”

However, the evening will include more than just music and dance.

Local businesses have donated door prizes and attendants can purchase raffle tickets for $1.

Also, if attendants would like to reminisce about the days of the 80s, they can take pictures with some former icons.

“You can get a Polaroid picture taken with some life-sized cardboard cut-outs of 80s heroes, including Mr. T and Hulk Hogan,” Thompson said.

The event is 18 and up only, but for the 21 and up crowd, there will be a drink special and proceeds will also benefit the fund.

Additionally, a costume contest with cash prizes will take place.

“We want people to have fun, but also to learn more about the fund,” Thompson said. “Whether you can donate $10 or $1,000 or just volunteer your time, it is all helpful.”
