Appalachian State University’s Sustainable Energy Society (ASUSES) and Sustainable Transportation have declared April the first “Earth Month” to celebrate the environmental initiatives on campus and around the world.
The month was designed to create awareness throughout the community about living in an environmentally conscious way.
Anna E. Erwin, secretary of ASUSES and graduate industrial technology major said the goal is to let students “know that they can make a difference because they can.”
Festivities during the month will include information sessions led by guest speakers and campus organizations.
Students
and the community can learn about emerging sustainable technologies,
minimizing carbon emissions and adopting strategies to enhance both the
health of the environment and their lives.
“My best
health is achieved when I live in a healthy environment,” Crystal S.
Simmons, chair of the Renewable Energy Initiative (REI) said.
These
sessions serve as invitations for students to ask questions and suggest
solutions and projects students think would improve the environmental
quality of Appalachian’s campus.
Those in
attendance will have a chance to become involved with the organizations
and their projects. The REI is currently exploring micro-hydro power,
which uses water as an alternative energy source.
William
C. Hildreth, public relations coordinator of ASUSES and freshman
biology/ecology and environmental biology major said becoming
environmentally active is like learning to play the piano.
“At first it’s a little tough, and it’s hard to get interested,” he said. “But as you get more involved… it becomes natural.”
Other
campus groups, such as REI, Appalachian & the Community Together,
ASU Sustainable Council, ASU Recycles and WNCREI have also contributed
to the creation of “Earth Month.”
All of their efforts will culminate April 22, or Earth Day, when a full day of events will be held on Sanford Mall.
