Appalachian State University students know a thing or two about making history.

From being three-time national champions to making U.S. World & News Report’s list of top universities, Appalachian students leave legacies from athletics to academia.

The idea of turning hard work and ideas into reality is one Associate Director of the Center for Student Involvement and Leadership Jim L. Street tries to impress upon students.

“Appalachian is your legacy and you are Appalachian’s,” Street said. “Each one of us individually can leave Appalachian better than we found it.”

Inspired by Street, the Community of Servant Leaders, located in Lovill Residence Hall’s third floor, are hosting the third annual “Leave Yosef a Legacy Day” Saturday.

The day will consist of multiple service projects for students to assist organizations throughout Boone who operate to aid the community.

The event begins at 10 a.m. in Whitewater Café for introductions and a speech by Chancellor Kenneth E. Peacock before transporting volunteers to their respective locations.

“At Appalachian, they try to teach students how to impact the world by acting locally,” Service Chair and freshman undecided major A. Nikki Chang said. “We are taking small steps by first making a difference in our community.”

Students will split into assigned groups to volunteer at the Watauga Humane Society, Mountain Alliance, Western Youth Network, Cove Creek Farm, Children’s Playhouse, Shelter Rock and The Salvation Army.

Specific details will not be released until they reach their service site.

The group hopes to register 140 students, doubling the amount that participated last year, Publicity and Registration Representative and freshman communication disorders major Colby L. Grier said.

“[Volunteers] will sacrifice their free time in order to benefit people who need help,” Grier said. “But it is also a chance to meet new people while benefiting the community.”

Students can register online at csil.appstate.edu/signup/sheet_id/1 .
