At age 18, Mike C. Kuebler’s mother passed away from Frontal Lobe Dementia.
It was this loss that helped fuel the inspiration for Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity’s Alzheimer’s fundraiser, Rock2Raise.
The benefit concert will take place April 25 from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. at the Old Boone Fairgrounds.
“At 14, I started noticing that my mother was not the same. I witnessed the process of what happens as a result of Alzheimer’s. The loss of my mother has made me a stronger person as well as given me a different outlook on life,” Kuebler, junior management major, said.
“My father’s
strength and dedication to help my mother was the most eye-opening
experience that has shown me the love and commitment that my dad had
shown towards my mom.”
Kuebler
is one of many Appalachian students who have felt the effects of
Alzheimer’s disease. Along with the other brothers of the Pi Kappa
Alpha, Kuebler will be able to raise awareness and money for the
Alzheimer’s Association.
“Pi
Kappa Alpha is not the main focus of the event. Our goal is that we
don’t promote Pi Kappa Alpha. We want everyone to contribute; anyone
who isn’t is missing out,” Corey R. Brennan, sophomore business
education major, said.
Pi Kappa Alpha and Appalachian alumnus Kurt Boughman came up with the idea for Rock2Raise.
“The
purpose of the event is to increase awareness for the Alzheimer’s
disease as well as putting on a great concert for the town,” Bret J.
Sowers, sophomore building sciences major and event coordinator, said.
Sponsored
by Klondike Café, Outback Steakhouse, Creative Printing, Boone Bagelry
and Sunrise Breakfast Shop in Chesapeake, Va., the concert will feature
games, prizes and nationally known bands.
Farewell,
Simplified, House of Fools, Company Cowboy, The Arrival, And Then There
Were None, Do It To Julia, Vice On Victory and Michael Alvarado will
all play sets throughout the day.
The event is “bring your own beverage,” with proper identification.
The event, while sponsored by Pi Kappa Alpha, is not a Greek-only event.
Tickets
are $10 and can be bought at any Rock2Raise contact table, through any
Pi Kappa Alpha brother or through Rock2Raise.com.
“We got
tired of doing fundraisers that would not give a substantial amount to
our cause. This way we can financially give a substantial amount of
money,” Brennan said.
“We
expect to have approximately 3,000 participants at this event,” Sowers
said. “This event has no limits and is open to everyone. In the years
to come, we hope that we can provide an event that will attract people
from all over the state, ultimately giving great exposure for local
businesses.”
