Local restaurant brings to-go menu to King Street Print E-mail

After almost four years of serving gourmet Italian dishes in an upscale setting to visitors in Blowing Rock, Pssghetti’s is now making its homemade dishes more convenient to Appalachian State University students and the Boone community.

Ready Pssghetti’s opened its doors at a new location on King Street Thursday, serving homemade Italian meals to go.

Pssghetti’s restaurant opened in Blowing Rock in May 2005 to serve traditional Italian food in an “Old Country” setting.

Since then, the owners purchased the former King Street theater, a portion of which is now dedicated to the to-go service.

“The whole concept is to introduce [the food] to people who can’t make it out to the restaurant,” Director of Operations Jerry G. Esposito said. “We are priced to appeal to people in this demographic.”

Their most popular lasagna dish is $12.99 at the restaurant and can be purchased to go for $3.99.

If a $4 meal does not entice college students, it may be their signature “meatball in a cup.”

“It’s a very large meatball with fresh herbs and 100 percent Angus beef served with sauce and garlic bread in a cup for only $1.50,” Esposito said.

Along with Italian food, the shop will serve hand-dipped Edy’s ice cream, energy drinks and “the cheapest coffee in Boone,” ground fresh for $1.

While the prices are generously affordable, the food is the same that is served at the restaurant.

“I would never want people to think we’re sacrificing quality,” Esposito said. “Everything we have is of the highest quality.”

All food is prepared fresh at the Blowing Rock location and transported to Boone daily.

About 60 percent of the restaurant’s menu is offered at the to-go location to be taken frozen, ready to heat or warm.

Frozen entrees are sold for 10 percent off the original price.

Appalachian students also receive a 5 percent discount.

Although the business is locally based out of Blowing Rock, the new location has an unusual tie to the university: the floor.

The hardwood floor is the former basketball court with the original markings and boundary lines.

We recycled the floor and plan to use it in multiple locations, Esposito said.

The restaurant will host an official grand opening to promote the business after Easter Break.

“We did a soft opening to sort out all of the kinks and make sure everything is running smooth,” Esposito said. “This is our first Ready Pssghetti’s, but we plan to put more in spots where we don’t have room for a full-fledged restaurant.”
