Co-worker approves incoming music Dean

I’ve had the privilege of working with incoming Hayes School of Music Dean Bill Pelto during his years at Ithaca College, and I just wanted to tell the Appalachian State University community that you’re in for a treat. Ithaca College’s loss is Appalachian’s gain. Dean Pelto is a beloved member of the Ithaca community. He is not only an accomplished scholar, musician, teacher and administrator, he’s also a deeply caring and active member of the campus community and the greater community.

Congratulations to your search committee for its excellent choice, and to the students, faculty and staff of Appalachian who will have the benefit of his experience, wisdom, kindness and presence.

University should focus on students’ needs

Class cuts, teacher cutbacks and even fewer hours in the library, all following increased costs for the students. How does this make sense?

A university should be here for its students, but Appalachian is not. All of the budget cuts are coming back to haunt the people who should be taken care of first. In a time of economic distress, a constant spending on “wants” over “needs” is the very thing that leads to this sort of travesty.

I can’t get into classes I will need as a senior, but completely unnecessary construction is everywhere.
A couple quick suggestions for you.

Put an end to all “dorm renovations” for the time being. Yes, it’s helpful for the student’s morale and makes the campus look better, but it’s a lot of money we don’t have.

Use that extra allotment of meal plan money every year for something that benefits all students. And while we’re at it, food service prices for regular students (not athletes who get all-you-can-eat options for dinner) are outlandish for very sub-par food. Stop ripping us off and not giving anything back.

These are merely two minor steps towards a much bigger goal, and I’m sure you could think of many more. Whether or not you’re willing to go through with them, however, is to be seen.
