After 25 years on campus at Appalachian State University, Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. is celebrating a legacy of inclusion, service and academic excellence.

Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. was the first of Appalachian’s six National Panhellenic Council affiliate organizations. The first chapter arrived on campus in 1982.

Since the first year, the organization has developed a strong reputation within the Greek community, as well as with the university and Boone.

Nationally, the organization is a supporter of St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis, Tenn., and has made the hospital their national philanthropy partner.

Members have been actively involved in the NPHC executive council, as well as serving the community through a variety of projects and programs.

“They’ve shown support for other groups on campus,” junior graphic arts and imaging technology major Anita E. Lampkin said.

Each year, members host 12 to 18 inner-city teens on campus in a nationwide service project called Kappa League.
Members take the teens out to eat and on a campus tour.

The program is designed to show the teens the benefits of an education, junior health promotions major and fraternity president Joshua D. Jackson said.
“Young men can succeed in life and they can become part of something bigger than what they are,” he said.

Appalachian alumnus and former chapter president Warren T. Posey attended the reunion banquet March 21.

“The bond, the brotherhood of this chapter is greater than any other I’ve seen,” Posey said.

He is proud of the chapter for their continued efforts to uphold the organization’s objectives. The time spent and relationships formed during his time at Appalachian continue to positively influence his life today, he said.

Of the banquet, Jackson said, “It’s not everyday you get to meet the men who started your organization.”

Posey said the foundation laid by the initial members of the organization on campus at Appalachian, “[opened] the doors for other great organizations.”
