Anthropology students will present the culmination of their hard work and research today through Friday during the 2009 Spring Senior Anthropology Conference in Plemmons Student Union.
The conference will feature papers from 23 senior anthropology students with topics including sustainable development, women’s health, theory and engagement, archaeological research, Native American studies and the environment.
The event is free and open to the public with no registration required.
This is the first
year the event is being held and provides an opportunity for students
to showcase their research and allow the public to discover
anthropology, Timothy J. Smith, assistant anthropology professor said.
“It’s an
open forum in the form of a conference to highlight our students and
their work,” Smith said. “The studies are pulled from the senior
seminar class. It really pulls everything together and lets the
students create an original research project.”
Each
segment of the conference will include a 15-minute presentation by the
student concerning their paper, followed by a 15-minute question and
answer session.
“It’s going to be a pretty wide gamut of topics,” Smith said.
The panels and discussions will begin at 3:30 p.m. and run until 6:30 p.m.
Presentations today and tomorrow will be held in the Callaway Peak Room and will move to the New River Room Thursday.
The conference will conclude Friday afternoon in the Price Lake Room.
Smith
hopes the wide range of topics will encourage the public to discover
what the field of anthropology encompasses outside of the typical
stereotype.
“We want
to give the public a little of what we do to sort of move beyond and
destroy the Indiana Jones impression of our field,” Smith said.
