Electronic media broadcasting major Jon M. Wood, a rising senior, was selected as next year’s station manager, something he says he has looked forward to.

“Ever since the first day walking in [to WASU], I’ve wanted to become station manager,” he said.

Wood, who is from Asheville, began working at WASU his freshman year in the sports section, eventually making his way to news director.

He hopes next year will bring positive changes to WASU and their relationship with the campus.

“One thing I really want to do is continue to improve our Web site and get feedback from students,” Wood said. “We want to be more involved with news, and broadcasting more events on campus.”

Wood hopes to increase the radio’s relationship with students and listeners. He invites anyone to come in to the station and talk with him.

While the task of station manager may be daunting, Wood says he is prepared for the challenges to come.

“I have a great staff who are ready to tackle the challenges ahead,” Wood said. “The sky’s the limit.”

Anne E. Baker

Rising senior Anne E. Baker, a journalism and technical photography double major, was selected as next year’s editor-in-chief for The Appalachian student newspaper.

Baker was hired at The Appalachian during the end of her freshman year at Appalachian State University.

“I thought it would be a beneficial organization to become involved in because it would give me insight to things happening around campus,” Baker said.

Baker’s plans for the upcoming year include increasing readership, strengthening content and promoting the Web site.

“A lot of students don’t know we have an online edition, and we’re planning on updating it daily this summer and next year,” Baker said.

Baker is not nervous about the year ahead and looks forward to the hard work ahead of her.

“I feel like we have a strong Editorial Board that is serious about bringing the newspaper to an award-winning level.”

Eric S. Lippert

Rising junior Eric S. Lippert, a marketing major from Apex, N.C. has been chosen as next year’s business manager for The Appalachian.

Lippert has had experience running small businesses before, and feels the business side of the newspaper will be a good fit for him.

“[Next] year there is going to be a big emphasis on bringing the editorial side and the advertisement side together,” he said.

Lippert has plans to introduce a number of new ideas for the 2009-10 school year. Among those plans are, “development of new accounts and introducing ads for the first time.”

He also hopes to establish a readership survey to provide the newspaper with a better idea of reader’s views.

Lippert has high hopes for next year and wishes to work with on-campus organizations to streamline the newspaper’s advertising.

“We’re trying to get back to being a more professional ad office,” he said.
