Appalachian State University was picked by both the Southern Conference coaches and media to win their fifth straight SoCon championship.
The Mountaineers received eight of the nine first place votes from coaches, which is considered unanimous since coaches are unable to vote for their own team.
Appalachian received 64 points in the coaches’ poll, 11 more than second place Wofford.
In the media poll, Appalachian was tabbed the conference champions on 46 of 48 ballots (429 points).
Elon was picked to finish second in the SoCon with 360 points.
The Mountaineers had 16 players selected to the preseason all-conference teams.
The two
biggest honors were given to Armanti Edwards and Jacque Roman, who were
named SoCon Offensive and Defensive Players of the Year, respectively.
Last
season Edwards totaled 3,843 yards of total offense and accounted for
41 touchdowns in route to winning the Walter Payton Award.
Roman, a linebacker, led the SoCon in 2008 with 130 tackles.
Other
Appalachian first team all-SoCon selections were offensive linemen
Mario Acitelli, Brett Irvin and Daniel Kilgore, defensive lineman
Jabari Fletcher and defensive backs Mark LeGree and Cortez Gilbert.
The Mountaineers’ season will begin Sept. 5 at East Carolina University.
