The Columnist Manifesto: Jackson death frenzy overshadows other American icon deaths Print E-mail

So, summer break is in the rearview mirror. Sucks, huh?

The big story this summer was the death of Michael Jackson at the relatively young age of 50. Whatever. I don’t want to take anything away from him, but there were a few other casualties who were, I feel, woefully overlooked.

With this is mind, I am going to take this opportunity to highlight some celebrity deaths whose media attention was greedily stolen away by the selfish King of Pop.

The most terribly wronged of all the dead is definitely Farrah Fawcett, who died on the same day as Jackson and was unfairly cast aside simply due to the fact that she is not him.

Fawcett was renowned for her overuse of plastic surgery and was often described as looking inhuman. Playboy founder Hugh Hefner is quoted as saying, “Farrah was one of the iconic beauties of our time. Her girl-next-door charm combined with stunning looks made her a star on film, TV and the printed page,” before commenting on her “empty, sunken eyes” and “breathtaking” dancing talent.

Broadcaster Walter Cronkite, The Most Trusted Man in America, passed away last month, ending a life full of landmark reports including the call on the JFK assassination and the first American television broadcast starring The Beatles.

Sadly, his later years were plagued with accusations of child molestation, the distress of which probably led to the overdose which killed him. Suicide hasn’t been ruled out.

Most recently, the inventor of both the electric guitar and the popular Moonwalk dance Les Paul died due to complications with pneumonia.

Notoriously loud pitchman and Neverland proprietor Billy Mays died suddenly in his house, rumored to be due to – shocker – a cocaine overdose.

Most tragically of all, Gidget, the beloved Taco Bell Chihuahua, passed away in recent weeks.

According to KXNet North Dakota News, the dog “suffered a massive stroke late Tuesday at her trainer’s home in Santa Clarita and had to be euthanized.”

Veterinarians are blaming the anesthetic propofol for the loss. He will be missed.
