After seven years as dean of students, Susie L. Greene will retire June 30, 2010. In response, Cindy A. Wallace, vice chancellor for Student Development, is heading up the process for finding possible candidates to fill the position.
A search committee of students and faculty will be formed, beginning in September.
Among the key
groups, Student Government Association, athletes, deployed students,
student development staff and selected staff and faculty members will
be asked to be included in the committee.
“It is
important to have a wide variety of students as part of the committee,”
Wallace said. “Some people have already asked to be on the committee,
which is great.”
The
committee, composed of three to four students and six to eight faculty
and staff members, will research what the job description of dean of
students should include, as well as the traits the future dean of
students should possess.
“In my
experience, the new dean of students will need to be able to deal with
ambiguity, love the students, have lots of energy, be open to
flexibility and support and challenge everyone,” Greene said.
Upon conducting research, the committee will send out information regarding the availability of the position.
“After
the candidates for the position have been narrowed down, background
checks have been done and references have been contacted, we will have
open forums where anyone can ask the candidates anything,” Wallace
said. “It is important for some folks to have an opportunity to ask
questions.”
The
forums will either be in a question and answer format, or the
candidates will give a presentation on a suggested topic of interest to
the university.
Following
the open forums, there will be two days in December set aside for
interviewing the candidates competing position. Student groups, the
student development staff, a faculty group, the search committee and
Wallace will interview the candidates.
The new dean of students will be selected as the 2010-11 school year begins.
